2008-2009

Congratulations to the LHS Choirs 2009 Sweepstakes Choirs!

UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest is made up of two parts.  A Concert and Sight Reading

1.       Concert:  Each Choir is required to perform two songs from the UIL music list according to the size of the high school and the level of the choir.  A third piece may be chosen from any source.  These selections are evaluated on Tone, Technique, and musicianship by three judges.  A score of 1 is Superior, 2 is Excellent, 3 is Good, 4 is Fair, and 5 is poor.  Two concurring scores are taken for a final score with the third being waved. In case of a three way split, the middle score becomes the overall average.

2.       Sight Reading:  Each Choir is given a piece of music to sight read that they have never seen before which has been written to specifications for school size and the level of the choir.  Neither choir members nor the directors know the key or anything else about the piece until they begin the study before singing.  They have 6 minutes to study the score during which time they may not sing anything.  Once they have sung the piece through, they have 2 minutes to work on perfecting the first performance before singing it a second time.  Once again, this process is judged by a three person panel and the scores are averaged the same as for the concert portion of the competition.

Sweepstakes is a superior rating in both Concert and Sight Reading.
